Moving from Akowonjo to Apapa takes you from the Alimosho residential hub straight into the heart of the Lagos port district. Because of the heavy trucks and port traffic, this route can be very slow, taking anywhere from 1.5 to over 3 hours depending on the time of day. This guide shows you the most practical ways to navigate this daily commute safely and efficiently using local yellow buses (Danfos), alternative connections, or ride-hailing cars.

Board a local Danfo or enter a Keke from your bus stop in Akowonjo (like Miccom or Vulcaniser) going to Iyana-Ipaja Under-bridge.
From Iyana-Ipaja, enter a large commercial bus or a Danfo heading straight to Oshodi Interchange.
At Oshodi, walk over to the Mile 2 park and board another Danfo going down the Apapa-Oshodi Expressway to Mile 2 Bus Stop.
From Mile 2, board the final Danfo or enter a shared Keke that goes directly into Apapa, dropping you at Wharf or coded destinations like Apocalypse or Eleganza.
Always carry smaller cash denominations (Change) to avoid arguments with conductors who do not have money to balance you.
Hold your phone and wallet firmly inside your pockets or hug your backpack to your chest when walking through Oshodi and Mile 2.
If the highway is completely blocked by fuel tankers near Mile 2, look for an Okada or Keke that can snake through the side streets to get you into Apapa faster.
Keep your window rolled up halfway if you are sitting by the side of the bus to prevent street boys from reaching in to snatch your items in slow-moving traffic.
With current fuel price hikes, you should hold at least β¦5,000 to β¦6,500 for a round trip using regular Danfo buses. This leaves you with a safety buffer in case fares go up during evening rush hours or sudden rain.
It is not highly recommended. The areas around Mile 2, Berger Suya, and the long stretches leading into Apapa become very dark and isolated at night, making them prime spots for traffic robberies. If you must travel late, use a reliable private vehicle or stay in a group.
Yes, heavy trucks and fuel tankers are a constant feature on the Apapa-Oshodi corridor. While the traffic control teams manage them better now, they can still block major lanes unexpectedly, especially around Trinity and Second Rainbow.
Lagos State laws ban commercial motorcycles from major highways. You can find small local okadas inside the neighborhood streets of Mile 2 and Apapa for short connections, but they are not allowed to carry you down the main expressway from Oshodi.

Best Time to Travel
To beat the extreme morning rush, leave Akowonjo between 5:00 AM and 6:00 AM. For the evening return trip from Apapa, try to leave before 4:00 PM, or wait out the worst gridlock until after 8:30 PM.
Safety Rating
Medium - You must remain highly alert, especially around Oshodi, Mile 2, and the Apapa port corridors. Pickpocketing and bag snatching by area boys are common in these crowded spots. Avoid showing expensive phones or carrying open bags. At night, stick strictly to well-lit bus stops and do not walk alone in isolated spots near the flyovers.
BRT / Rail / Water
There is no direct BRT lane or passenger rail line connecting Akowonjo straight to Apapa. However, you can use the standard BRT buses along parts of the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway (from Iyana-Ipaja to Oshodi) to bypass some traffic, then switch to regular commercial buses or kekes for the rest of the journey to Apapa.
