Ajah is a name that every Lagosian knows. It is the place where the 'New Lagos' begins. But because it is so far from the old centers like Victoria Island, some people get confused: Is Ajah Mainland or Island?
Ajah is located on the Lagos Island axis (the Lekki-Epe Expressway). Even though it is a long drive from the 'Old Island,' it is part of the same peninsula. It is surrounded by the Lagos Lagoon on one side and the Atlantic Ocean further down. It is the heart of the fast-growing Ibeju-Lekki corridor.
Life in Ajah is defined by the 'Jubilee Bridge.' Before the bridge was built, traffic here was legendary. Today, it is much better, but Ajah remains a very busy commercial and residential hub. It is where many people move to when they want the Island lifestyle but at a more affordable price than Lekki Phase 1 or Ikoyi.
If you are coming from the Mainland, you have to cross the Third Mainland Bridge and drive all the way through Lekki. It is a straight road, but it is a long one. Ajah is the gateway to places like Abraham Adesanya, Sangotedo, and Epe. It is a place that never sleeps, with markets, estates, and shops everywhere.
Verdict: Ajah is 100% on the Island side.
