If you mention Akoka, most people immediately think of the University of Lagos (UNILAG). It is the center of academic life in the city. But for those visiting the campus, the question often comes up: Is Akoka Mainland or Island?
Akoka is located on the Lagos Mainland, specifically in the Yaba axis. It sits right on the edge of the Lagos Lagoon, which is why the UNILAG campus has such a beautiful water view. However, it is firmly a Mainland territory, surrounded by other academic and residential areas like Onike and Bariga.
Akoka is a 'student town.' Everything here is built for the thousands of students and lecturers who spend their days in the area. From the hostels to the libraries and the small shops selling snacks and books, Akoka has a very unique, intellectual feel. It is a place of learning and great memories for many Nigerians.
Reaching Akoka from the Island is easy because it is very close to the Third Mainland Bridge. You cross the bridge and take the exit toward Yaba/Herbert Macaulay Way. From there, it is a short drive to the famous UNILAG gates. Because it is a student area, there are always plenty of buses and tricycles (keke) moving people around.
Verdict: Akoka is the academic heart of the Mainland.
