Is Onike Close to Ikeja? Your 2026 Travel Guide for Lagos

The "Proximity" Explained

Given their locations, Onike (in Lagos Mainland) and Ikeja (the state capital) are separated by a few key areas, most notably Maryland. Maryland acts as a significant transit point between the Yaba/Onike axis and Ikeja. So, while you won't walk from Onike to Ikeja, a short bus or car ride across Maryland will get you there.

The journey typically involves traversing through parts of Shomolu or taking the Ikorodu Road axis towards Maryland, and then branching off into Ikeja proper. This makes the travel time usually fall within 30 minutes to an hour, depending heavily on Lagos's notorious traffic conditions.

Safety and Travel Tips

Traveling in Lagos can be an adventure. Here are some tips to make your journey between Onike and Ikeja safe and smooth:

1. Plan for Traffic: Lagos traffic is legendary. Always factor in extra time, especially during peak hours (6:00 AM - 9:00 AM and 4:00 PM - 8:00 PM on weekdays). A 30-minute journey can easily become 1.5 hours in heavy traffic.

2. Confirm Fares: Before you enter a Danfo (yellow bus) or Keke Napep, always confirm the fare to your destination to avoid arguments later. Bus conductors usually shout their destinations, so listen carefully.

3. Keep Valuables Secure: Be mindful of your belongings, especially in crowded bus stops and while in transit. Keep your phone, wallet, and other valuables in a secure place.

4. Use Ride-Hailing Apps for Convenience: If you prioritize comfort and direct travel and don't mind the higher cost, ride-hailing services like Uber and Bolt are excellent options. They also offer a layer of safety and accountability.

5. Stay Aware of Your Surroundings: Pay attention to where you are going and who is around you. Avoid distractions like constantly looking at your phone, especially in busy areas.

6. Travel During Daylight: While Lagos is generally active at night, it's always safer to complete your journeys during daylight hours if possible, especially if you're new to the routes.

7. Ask for Directions: Don't hesitate to ask locals for directions if you're unsure. Most Nigerians are friendly and willing to help.
