Safety and Travel Tips for Onike

Traveling in Lagos requires a bit of street smarts, and Onike is no exception. Here are some essential safety and travel tips to make your experience smooth and secure:

1. Be Aware of Your Surroundings: Like any busy urban area, keep an eye on your belongings. Avoid openly displaying expensive gadgets or large sums of cash.
2. Use Reputable Transport: Stick to recognized public transport like Danfo buses, Keke Napeps, or ride-hailing services (Bolt, Uber, Indrive). If taking a Keke Napep, try to use ones that are not overly crowded.
3. Confirm Fares: Before entering a Keke Napep or local mini-bus, always ask for the fare to your specific destination. This helps avoid misunderstandings or overcharging.
4. Travel During Daylight: If you're unfamiliar with Onike or Lagos in general, it’s advisable to plan your journeys during daylight hours. The area is generally safe, but like any city, it's easier to navigate when it's bright.
5. Keep Valuables Secure: Use a cross-body bag or keep your wallet in a front pocket. Avoid putting phones or wallets in back pockets.
6. Stay Hydrated: Lagos weather can be hot. Carry water, especially if you plan to walk around.
7. Ask for Directions: Don't hesitate to ask locals for directions if you're lost. Most Lagosians are friendly and willing to help. However, try to ask people who look like they are going about their daily business, like shop owners or bus drivers.
8. Have Small Denominations: It's always a good idea to have smaller naira notes (₦50, ₦100, ₦200, ₦500) for bus fares. Conductors often don't have change for large notes.
9. Use Ride-Hailing Apps for Convenience: For door-to-door convenience and transparent pricing, ride-hailing apps are a good option, especially if you're carrying luggage or traveling late.

By following these tips, you can enjoy your time in Onike and navigate Lagos with confidence. Onike is a lively and essential part of Lagos, offering a unique glimpse into the city's academic and urban pulse.
