Moving from the quiet student community of Akoka down to the busy commercial and cultural hub of Onikan can be very easy if you plan well. Because of high fuel prices, fares have gone up, but you still have multiple options. You can take commercial yellow buses (Danfo) or use ride-hailing apps. The journey takes you from the mainland, across the Third Mainland Bridge, and directly into Lagos Island.

Board a direct Danfo bus or take a Keke from Akoka (near UNILAG gate or Pako) heading straight to Yaba Bus Stop.
Drop at Yaba, walk towards the major park, and board a big Danfo or Coaster bus going straight to Obalende.
Drop at Obalende under-bridge, then take a short walk or board a mini-bus/Keke heading towards CMS or directly passing Onikan.
Tell the driver or conductor you will drop at Onikan Bus Stop, right next to the stadium or the museum.
Always carry smaller Naira notes (change) like β¦200 and β¦500 so you do not have issues with the bus conductor.
Listen carefully to the conductor when entering the bus to ensure it is going to Obalende via Third Mainland Bridge, not through the longer Mainland/Oyingbo route.
Keep your phones and wallets inside your main bag, and hold the bag tightly to your chest in crowded parks.

Safety Rating
Medium - The route is generally safe during the day because of heavy human traffic, but you must look sharp. Watch your pockets and bags at busy junctions like Yaba, Oyingbo, and Obalende, especially early in the morning and late at night. Beware of 'one-chance' criminals in unmarked cars.
BRT / Rail / Water
There is no direct BRT or train line from Akoka to Onikan. However, you can catch the Blue Line Rail if you move from Yaba down to Marina, or use the standard BRT buses along the Ikorodu Road corridor if you connect through Yaba/Fadeyi.

With current fuel price hikes, it is safe to keep at least β¦2,500 for a round trip if you are using commercial Danfo buses. If you plan to take a ride-hailing car, budget between β¦7,000 and β¦10,000 for a single trip depending on the time of day.
No, you will rarely find a direct yellow Danfo bus from Akoka to Onikan. You will almost always need to stop and change buses at Yaba or Obalende.
If the bridge is totally blocked, your best alternative is to take a bus from Yaba that goes through Oyingbo, Iddo, and Carter Bridge to enter Lagos Island, though this route has its own heavy local traffic.
You can only use your Cowry Card if you catch one of the regulated franchise buses or BRT links from Yaba. Regular yellow Danfo buses and Kekes do not accept the Cowry Card; they strictly take cash.
