Welcome to Badagry, a town in Lagos State that holds a very special and often painful place in Nigeria's history. For many years, Badagry was a major gateway, not just for trade but also for a dark period in human history β the transatlantic slave trade. Today, it stands as a living museum, a place where you can touch, see, and feel the stories of generations past.
As a transport analyst and content writer for Faster.ng, my goal is to help you understand this important town. We will look at its deep history, its key landmarks, and how you can easily visit Badagry to experience its unique heritage for yourself. Itβs a journey back in time, right here in Lagos.
Badagry is located in the Badagry Local Government Area (LGA) of Lagos State, Nigeria. It sits along the coastline, very close to the border with the Republic of Benin. This strategic location has always made it an important point for trade and movement, both in the past and today.
The town is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean to the south and by lagoons and creeks that connect it to other parts of Lagos and Ogun State. To the west, you have the Seme border, a busy crossing point into Benin Republic. The land here is mostly flat, with a lot of water bodies like the Badagry Lagoon, which played a big role in its history. Nearby towns include Ojo and Amuwo-Odofin LGA further east in Lagos.
Before the Europeans arrived, Badagry was already a thriving settlement. Its name is said to come from "Gbagle-egi," meaning "a farm of Gbagle," a local farmer. The area was settled by various ethnic groups, including the Awori, Ogu (Egun), and Ewe people, who engaged in fishing, farming, and local trade.
Its coastal location made it naturally suited for trade. Local goods like salt, fish, and agricultural products were exchanged with communities along the coast and inland. This early network laid the foundation for what would become a much larger, and more tragic, trading enterprise.
The 18th century marked a dark turn for Badagry. It became one of the most significant ports for the transatlantic slave trade. This was a period when millions of Africans were forcibly taken from their homes and shipped across the Atlantic Ocean to work as slaves in the Americas.
Badagryβs lagoons and creeks provided hidden routes for slave traders to move captives. The town served as a collection point where enslaved people were held in barracoons (slave cells) before being marched to the coast.
One of the most powerful and heartbreaking sites is the **"Point of No Return."** This symbolic gate, located on Gberefu Island, marks the final point where enslaved Africans touched Nigerian soil before being loaded onto ships. Walking through it gives visitors a chilling sense of the finality and despair faced by those who passed through it centuries ago.
Other important historical sites tied to this era include:
Vlekete Slave Market: This was a major market where enslaved people were bought and sold. It dates back to 1502 and was a central hub for the trade.
Seriki Abbas Compound: This compound belonged to a powerful slave merchant. It contains relics from the slave trade, including chains, handcuffs, and the small, dark rooms where captives were kept.
Mobee Royal Family Slave Museum: This museum houses artifacts and documents related to the slave trade, giving insights into the lives of both the enslavers and the enslaved.
As the slave trade began to decline, Badagry saw a new kind of arrival: Christian missionaries. In 1842, the first Christian missionaries, including Thomas Birch Freeman and Henry Townsend, arrived in Badagry. They brought with them Christianity and Western education.
A major landmark from this period is the **First Storey Building in Nigeria**, built in 1845. Located near the Anglican Church, this building served as a mission house and a place where the missionaries lived and worked. It also housed the first primary school in Nigeria and the Bible translated into Yoruba by Bishop Ajayi Crowther.
Badagry also played a role in the British colonial administration, though its importance as a port decreased as Lagos grew. Despite this, its historical significance remained, and it served as a key administrative center for the western region of Lagos Colony.
In 2026, Badagry remains an important town. Its proximity to the Seme border makes it a bustling commercial hub, with goods and people constantly moving between Nigeria and Benin Republic. The town is also a growing tourist destination, attracting visitors who want to learn about its rich history and experience its unique culture.
